Abstract: As a country overlying several active faults, Turkey is prone to significant seismic risk due to seismic hazards and vulnerable building stock in its populated cities. The 2023 Earthquake sequence has once again exposed this vulnerability unfortunately in a catastrophic manner. This presentation will focus on seismic retrofit implementations in Turkey. The requirement for urban transformation will first be discussed followed by details of current legislation for seismic retrofitting. The seminar will then focus on seismic retrofitting techniques and their applications. Several case studies will be presented, including seismic retrofit of residential and historical buildings, conventional upgrade methods, fiber-reinforced polymers, and more advanced technologies.

About the Speaker: Bayram Aygün holds BSc degree in Civil Engineering from Istanbul Technical University. Upon receiving his undergraduate degree, he attended Rice University and received his MSc degree in Civil Engineering. He then continued his graduate studies at Stanford University. After attending Stanford for a year, he decided to work in the industry as an engineer and worked for Bechtel-ENKA for two years. Since 2012, he has been involved in seismic retrofitting projects, first by working at Fyfe-Tekstar Engineering Solution Partnership and from 2017 at Artyol Engineering. Throughout his tenure in the industry, Mr. Aygün has developed expertise in seismic retrofitting and upgrading of existing reinforced concrete structures, industrial facilities, as well as masonry and historical buildings.
