The event will take place on Zoom and is open to anyone interested.

Abstract: EVs (Electric Vehicles), especially EFVs (Electric Flying Vehicles) are important enabling technologies for sustainable living on our planet. EVs have a smaller carbon footprint than gasoline cars, even including charging. However, the limited onboard energy of EVs needs novel research to increase the effectiveness of EVs. In this talk we will addresses this issue and present geometry-based optimisation heuristics for making drone-based operations more effective. Drones are very versatile vehicles that can be utilized in many critical operations. They can be mobile IoT stations, providing mission-critical data. Drones can fly directly from one point to another following the shortest possible path. Two important operation types are examined in this work. Namely, region coverage and pathfinding. While the region coverage operations involve the static configuration of drones, pathfinding involves the dynamic utilisation of drones. For both types of operations, geometry-based optimisation heuristics are proposed and benchmarked. The improvements over the base case methods are measured in an experimental setup. Statistical meanings of the results are discussed and the most effective methods are stated. While the energy (or flight distance to reach the goal) was the main objective for the optimisations, u201cscenario-based weighted multi-objective scoringu201d is utilized in the proposed optimisation frameworks.u00a0
